I picked up a copy
I picked up a copy of James Gleick's
Faster, because I enjoyed his earlier works,
Genius and
Chaos. So far, however, I'm not as impressed. Though well written, and somewhat urgent in tone -- kudos to the writer and editors if their goal is to make the reader rush through each chapter, without pausing to reflect on its contents -- it makes some rather tenuous claims about speed driving technology and hence driving cultural change. I'd be inclined to reverse his claim -- rather than the desire for greater speed driving technology, I'd say that better technology simply encourages us to speed up, because we
can.
I won't comment on the irony of the availability of an
abridged CD version of the book. Heh.
